Description:
Mr. Jeevan / Arjun Bhandari Residence – Devdaha-5, Rupandehi
Situated in the heart of Devdaha-5, Rupandehi, this residence stands as a thoughtfully planned architectural response to both the client's aspirations and the climatic context of Nepal’s Terai region. Spanning a plinth area of 996 sq. ft. and a total built-up area of 1992 sq. ft. within a 1408.25 sq. ft. site, the residence exemplifies the balance of practical living, environmental responsiveness, and cultural sensibility.
Client Vision
The client envisioned a home with maximum open space utilization — a residence that not only felt spacious and breathable but also facilitated comfort and functionality throughout. The goal was to optimize the site’s potential, ensuring that every square foot contributed meaningfully to daily life.
Design Approach
Given the hot and humid climate of the Terai region, the design integrates a passive cooling strategy to enhance thermal comfort while reducing energy dependency. Key interventions include the use of vertical and horizontal shading devices to block harsh sunlight while promoting air circulation. Carefully planned fenestration treatment supports cross ventilation, allowing cool breezes to flow through the home naturally.
One of the core design challenges was addressing the vertical massing of the structure. Despite the residence being vertically tall in composition due to space optimization, it was essential to ensure that the facade and overall massing did not appear bulky or disproportionate. This was skillfully managed through proportionate setbacks, façade articulation, and material choices that visually soften the height.
Additionally, Vaastu Shastra principles were considered throughout the design process, in alignment with the client’s spiritual and cultural beliefs. From the spatial orientation of rooms to the flow of movement and placement of key functional areas, traditional guidelines were harmonized with contemporary design sensibilities to create a home that feels grounded, balanced, and holistic.
The result is a modern residence that speaks to its context climatically responsive, spatially efficient, culturally rooted, and aesthetically refined.
